Interior Design Tips

There’s no one right way to go about decorating your home – sometimes the best way to figure out what you like is through trial and error. However, here are a few general guidelines that may help you get started in creating a space that you love.

1. Choose a style

When you’re trying to create a beautiful home interior, the first step is deciding on a style. This will help ensure that the design elements and colour palettes you use throughout the process of decorating your home ultimately creates a harmonious and cohesive whole.

Taking some time to get familiar with several different decorating styles – such as contemporary, shabby chic, industrial, mid-century modern, Scandinavian, Tuscan, and modern Victorian – is a great way to get a sense for what you like and what best suits you. Create a mood board or inspiration folder to collect ideas and start putting together a vision for your space. Once you have a better idea of the style you’re going for, the rest of the process will be much easier.

2. Balance is key

Balance, in interior design, is the even distribution of visual weight across a space. This is important in creating a sense of harmony and stability in your living space.

Balance can be easily achieved by incorporating furniture and accent pieces that vary in size, shape, and height. You can experiment with different arrangements to create a symmetrical or asymmetrical balance, depending on your personal preferences. Don’t be afraid to mix and match!

Additionally, using objects with contrasting colours, and different materials and textures (like linen, leather and velvet) will add depth, dimension and visual interest to your space.

3. Set a clear focal point

In any room, there should be a singular focal point that draws the eye towards it. An interesting piece that stands out among the others.

4. Use negative space to your advantage

Your living space needs some space too. Leave clear pathways around your furniture and decorative pieces and balance out busy areas with blank spaces. With more room to breathe, a well-measured balance of space and objects will make your home feel less cluttered and more comfortable to live in.
